Chicken treats can add variety, enrichment, and another way to interact with your flock, but they should supplement rather than replace a complete feed formulated for your birds’ age and stage of production. The best treat choice depends on what you want the treat to do, how you plan to offer it, and whether your flock’s regular ration remains the nutritional foundation.
1. Start with the complete ration
Use a complete poultry feed appropriate for the flock as the primary ration. Treats, scratch grains, kitchen scraps, insects, fruits, and vegetables are extras rather than substitutes for a balanced feed.
2. Match the treat to the purpose
Dried insects can be convenient for hand feeding, training birds to come when called, scattering for foraging, or loading into enrichment feeders. Fresh fruits and vegetables can also provide flock activity when they are appropriate for chickens and offered in manageable portions.
3. Think about enrichment as well as ingredients
How a treat is offered can matter almost as much as what is offered. Scattering a small amount through litter or grass encourages searching and scratching. Hanging compatible produce or using a treat holder can extend activity compared with placing everything in one pile.
4. Keep treats supplemental
